Tech Talk with MCE
MCE recommends the following conservative approach to engine break-in. Following these steps will help extend the longevity of your crankshaft and will eliminate the risks of premature failure.

  • Start the engine with the choke ON
  • Turn the choke OFF once the engine is running
  • Keep the RPMs steady at 4000 until the temperature is at 50C
  • Vary RPMs between 6000 and 8000 until the temperature is at 70C
  • Shut off the engine
  • Let the engine cool to at least 25C
  • Repeat the above steps two more times
  • Complete 25 miles of easy, 10,000 RPM limited laps while maintaining an engine temperature between 55C and 65C.
The initial steps are referred to as "heat cycling". This is a very important procedure that allows all the new components to stabilize under the thermal conditions of operation. Failure to follow these instructions may have expensive consequences.

Alternative to this break-in routine, contact MCE about breaking in your engine on MCE's dynomometer. Your engine will be delivered heat cycled, broken in, and ready to race. Additional cost is involved.
