Custom Head Volumes & Profiles

Head volume is an important parameter in the performance of a two-stroke engine. The correct head volume for your setup will depend on many things, including the octane of the fuel you use and the altitude of the racetrack. The serious racer or tuner will have a variety of head volumes to choose from depending on various conditions.

Operating in conjunction with the head volume is the head profile or combustion chamber shape. The shape of the combustion chamber can be optimized for the burn rates of many popular fuels from unleaded to the more expensive and exotic brews of elf 2T and NUTEC.

Some points to consider:
  • Head volumes are set to an accuracy of 1/100th of a cc.
  • Converting a bike from unleaded to leaded (or vice versa) necessitates a change in head volume.
  • 250 racers will find it beneficial to have the head volumes of both cylinders precisely balanced.
  • When you change your head volume you might also find it beneficial to have detonation rings installed.
